One of my favorite traditions is your yearly picture in your great grandmothers clothes. Each year we take your picture in Great – Grandma Howard’s swimsuit and Great – Grandma Miller’s wedding dress. You can check out the past years here.
Jan. 24, 2015 – age 9
Last year we didn’t take the pictures until May!

Not being a morning person, our birthday tradition of opening the “family” presents before dawn isn’t my favorite. Unfortunately you do not share my love of sleeping in.
Happy 9th birthday my sweet Emma! We love you so much!
Thanks for letting Kenny open a couple of your presents.
For the last few years our New Years Day tradition has been to go to the Mall of America in Minneapolis. American Girl always has extra special activities and giveaways in celebration of their new doll of the year. You couldn’t be more thrilled with this year’s – Grace Thomas – who loves Paris and baking. Two of your favorite things!
This doll bakery is amazing! I love that you have started saving.
They even had cookie decorating and little luggage tags for the kids and dolls.
Today you used your Christmas money to get Grace and are “trying” to wait patiently for your birthday so you get some of her accessories.
The rest of the day you both enjoyed the rides even with the long lines.
~Just for fun~
-Your love for Paris started at age 4 after our fun mother and daughter trip to Germany and France in 2010.
Every year we take a picture of Emma in a wedding dress and swimsuit that were worn by two of her great-grandmothers. And for Kenny we have done the same with two different hats that were his great-grandfathers and Papa Swany’s Army jacket. The black hat was his Great-Grandfather Kenneth Swanstrom (Dana’s paternal grandfather). The light colored hat was his Great-Grandfather Maurice Howard’s (Tammy’s maternal grandfather).
The first 5 pictures are from Kenny’s 5 year shoot.
Here is Kenny at 4 years old in 2012.
Kenny age 3 ~ 2011 (This year is extra special because he is wearing Grandma Swany’s old boots.)
Kenny age 2 ~ 2010
Kenny age 1 ~ 2009
Kenny at 6 months. (We didn’t have the other hat or coat yet.)
Happy 8th Birthday Emma! We started the day with our birthday tradition of opening the family presents as soon as everyone was awake. And then we headed to the Mall of America to celebrate.
After opening all her friend and family presents she has quite the Lego collection.
For the past few years we make the trip to the Mall of America on New Years Day. Emma’s favorite thing is the new American Girl Doll of the Year comes out Jan. 1st. This year she got Isabelle with her Christmas money. Kenny’s favorite is the Lego store. Today he picked out the Gold Mine set.
Every year around Emma’s birthday we take a picture of her in Great-Grandma Maxine’s wedding dress and Great-Grandmother Virginia’s swimming suit. They usually aren’t great pictures but its fun to see how much she has grown since last year.

Every year we go to a local tree farm and cut down our tree. Usually at the same time we try to get our Christmas card picture. With my sister and family in town we put her to work; she really did get some fun shots. Usually we just post the good ones but this time I decided to include some of the outtakes.
Here are some outtakes. I cannot figure out why making a collage makes the photos compressed and lose their sharpness.
This year Kenny definitely wasn’t excited to for his birthday photo shoot with Great Grandpa Maurice’s and Great Grandpa Kenneth’s hat. But doesn’t he look cute? This year is extra special because he fits into Grandma Kathy’s cowboy boots!
